How self-publishing could grow Paul’s fitness business

He knew that self-publishing a fitness book would build his brand as it would:

  1. give him authority – when prospective customers google him and see a slick book with 5 star reader reviews they will be impressed
  2. enable him to reach a wider audience (his customers no longer had the geographic restriction of needing to live near his gym!)
  3. raise his profile – get coverage in local media and get people talking about him and his business
  4. get him more clients

Since Jo Wicks entered the bestseller charts a couple of years ago, there has been a huge increase in demand for books on health and fitness. Paul saw this trend and realised that those with much less experience than himself were publishing fitness books and getting good reviews. If they could do it, so could he.

But he didn’t really know how to self-publish a fitness book. He had a go at doing it without any help, and the end result was disappointing. It wasn’t getting him the recognition he wanted or helping to develop his brand. The quality of the book didn’t do him justice. He knew he needed professional help, so firstly he hired a really good photographer who took great action shots of him demonstrating boxing moves as well as the weight-loss “before and after” pictures of some of his clients. Then he worked with our team to get a really powerful cover designed, which reflects his no-nonsense, straight-talking approach. One of our proofreader’s carefully went through the manuscript and showed him how certain sections would be better either split up or combined, as well as making sure things were consistent (e.g. not switching from kgs to lbs). These little things easily slip through the net when an author goes it completely alone. We then produced a paperback and eBook version for him, which is available here and getting fantastic five-star reviews. He’s even had a full page interview in the Newcastle Chronicle, promoting his book and his business. With our help, he is now achieving his self-publishing goals.

How to self-publish a fitness book: Paul’s top 5 tips

Paul learned the hard way, so here he shares his top tips so you can learn from his experience:

  1. Have a clear plan of attack in terms of dates and timescales and try and stick with them. In the fitness industry, January is the busiest month so I knew I had to get things ready in time to make to most of all those New Year’s resolutions! It’s also the time of year when the media run the most health and fitness articles. I didn’t want to miss out.
  2. Get as high resolution pictures as possible. If you can, hire a professional photographer, but otherwise buy images from high quality image libraries.
  3. Work with a proofreader to help you get your writing up to scratch.
  4. Ensure you utilise all publishing mediums (paperback and Kindle) and publicise them as widely as possible.
  5. Be flexible. When challenges present themselves, there’s always a route around them.

We hope Paul has inspired you to put your expertise into a book. We work with professionals across a range of sectors, both business to business (e.g. consultants and trainers) and business to consumer like e.g. (life coaches, personal trainers and stylists) who have self-published  really high quality books that they use to both get more clients and build their brand. Very informative book for people who like me are novices in the boxing and fitness world as well as the more experienced who actually train hard. I've tried Zumba etc however the author advises on the disciplines of the sport, nutritional advice and which foods to eat to keep your body and mind fit and active and full of energy. I've actually yet to join a boxercise class but the book has inspired me to join up and follow the regimes set out to follow throughout every day life. Very well written with a lot of personal information from the author which is very inspirational
